Hypertherm Powermax plasma cutters are known not only for their high quality, but also for their wide range of applications. Various available torches and consumables make it possible to adapt these versatile systems to many different processes.
Selecting the proper equipment is crucial to achieving optimal workflow efficiency. The choice of gases also plays a significant role in plasma cutting and gouging performance.
In this article, we will discuss the diverse applications of Powermax plasma systems from leading manufacturer Hypertherm.
Drag Cutting
Thanks to a special shield (standoff ring), the operator can drag the torch directly across the workpiece during cutting. All Powermax systems support drag cutting when using a handheld torch.
Precision Cutting
Hypertherm’s FineCut® consumables were designed for high-precision cutting using air plasma. They are an excellent solution for cutting complex, intricate shapes. FineCut® consumables are available for both handheld torches and mechanized cutting torches.
Flush Cutting
Removing protruding elements can be challenging, especially when cutting close to the base material risks damaging it. This is where Hypertherm’s unique FlushCut® consumables excel. They allow cutting extremely close to the base surface without piercing it. These consumables are available for both manual and mechanized applications.
Mechanized Cutting
CNC plasma tables deliver outstanding productivity while remaining intuitive to use. Most Powermax systems (with the exception of the 30 XP and 30 AIR) are equipped with a CPC interface that enables integration with a cutting table. A full range of torches and consumables designed for mechanized cutting is also available.
Cutting and Gouging in Hard-to-Reach Areas
Hypertherm HyAccess™ consumables feature a slim, elongated design that provides approximately 76 mm of additional reach while minimally obstructing the operator’s view. This allows precise cutting and gouging in tight or difficult-to-access areas. HyAccess™ consumables are intended for handheld use.
Gouging with Maximum Control
Special Max Control gouging shields enable precise material removal. They are ideal for shallow gouging and cleaning. Max Control shields are compatible with both handheld and mechanized torches.
Gouging with Maximum Removal
Max Removal gouging shields are designed for heavy-duty removal of large amounts of material. They are suitable for deep gouging and aggressive cleaning in both handheld and mechanized applications.
Precision Gouging
Precision gouging is one of the two unique applications of the Powermax 45 XP. Using dedicated precision-gouging nozzles and shields allows removal of small amounts of material in handheld tasks requiring high accuracy, such as removing spot welds.
Marking
Marking is the second unique capability of the 45 XP model. Using the precision-gouging nozzle in combination with the marking shield enables both manual and mechanized part marking, such as engraving identification numbers. Parameter adjustments allow for shallow marking (easily removed or painted over) or deep marking (remaining visible after finishing or coating).
Powermax 30 AIR
The Powermax 30 AIR supports only drag cutting with a handheld torch. However, it stands out thanks to one exceptional feature: a built-in air compressor. Because it requires no external compressor or gas supply, this compact system offers unmatched portability.
CopperPlus Electrode
For cutting materials up to 12.5 mm thick, the CopperPlus electrode is an excellent choice. This unique electrode provides twice the life of standard electrodes. The extended consumable life results in fewer downtime events linked to electrode replacement.

Summary
As shown, the range of capabilities offered by the Powermax series is truly impressive. Specialized consumables open the door to many possible applications, but it is important to remember that these components are consumable by nature. Regular replacement is essential to maintain optimal performance and ensure high-quality cutting and gouging.
